The trail to Che Kung Temple…

Che Kung Temple is most famous of all temples in Sha Tin region, Hong Kong which is built for the memory of Che Kung, a general who served in Song Dynasty in China. Che Kung protected the last emperor of Song Dynasty and the temple is attributed for his bravery and contribution.

According to the folklore, 300 hundred years ago people of Sha Tin district were affected by a deadly plague and that time Che Kung was the general of Song dynasty. Because of the faith in their general, people started to carry the tablets with the general’s name on it and paraded to save their district from the epidemic. Soon the epidemic vanished and the belief of the people was strengthened and they started to worship Che Kung. Some time afterward the temple was built and it was named by their beloved general.

Today Sha Tin is a collection of fast developing new towns in Hong Kong and some of the most beautiful temples are located in the region. To get to the Che Kung Temple one should take the train to Che Kung Temple and has to walk another 10 minutes. After the sight seeing, travelers can enjoy a rare horse ride or can pay a visit to the Hong Kong Heritage Museum which is situated near the Che Kung Temple.

It is said that Good luck will prevail throughout the year if somebody rotates the sails of the copper windmill inside the Che Kung Temple. This belief is formed by the age old practice of the local people and now on every 3rd of January in the lunar calendar locals as well as foreigners get to gather in Che Kung Temple premises to worship, burn incense sticks to commemorate their beloved General’s birthday.
