Internet domain registration how to do it

by Dee Buteland

If you need to get an internet domain name for a new hobby site or online business, or to reserve your own given name as a dot com, the steps are very straightforward.

First, think of the domain name you want. Many of the internet domain services, like Godaddy, offer various tools which will help here. You enter any domain name, and they will reveal whether the domain is owned by someone or not. If it is still free, you can register it. If it is already taken by another person, then the domain name registration service will offer you varieties of the domain name to consider, or you could think about using other suffixes, like .net, .info or .biz.

While .com names are still the most familiar and most common, the amount of traffic you will get to your new domain will be due to your optimization and promotion efforts and will have very little to do with the suffix, so don't be to upset if you cannot get the .com extension of the domain name you would like.

Right, you have found the internet domain name you like, and it is not already taken by somebody else, what exactly do you do now?

Using a service like Godaddy, and having performed the search for a name and confirmed that it is unregistered, you will be able to click on a 'Buy Name Now' button or similar.

You must choose the length of time you want to register the domain for – from a minimum of one to ten years. If you have exciting ideas for the web site, or want it as an investment, go for a longer period. If the domain is just for securing for the present, choose a lesser period.

Next, you have to type in your real name and email contact details. When you own a company, you can also enter the company name. These details is used for the registration of the domain – the domain name is recorded as legally belonging to you, for the time period you have registered it for. Officially, you become the 'registrant' of the name, and no-one else can have it.

Following on with the registration, you should choose whether your registration is to be public, or protected (or 'private'). A public registration will mean that any persion using anything like theWhois lookup service will be able to investigate the domain name and see your name and details. While planning the website you are going to create, you may consider paying the small amount extra for a protected registration which conceals your details will be a good idea to avoid spam or crank messages.

Now having taken your decision, you can give your credit card or Paypal details, agree to the payment amount, and the domain becomes yours, for the period of years you have selected. The best registration services like Godaddy will remind you, using the email address you registered with, when the date comes to renew the registration of your domain.

Internet domain registration is really as easy as that!
