How to Start Saving

by Andrew Kapinga

Sometimes it's hard to start saving, but procrastination will get you nowhere. Spending a week where you write down everything you spent at the end of each day might shock you into realising just how those cents add up to dollars. Make today the day you actually start to carry out a savings plan. The first step need not be hard. Simply go online and change your bank account over to an electronic savings account - the kind with much higher interest rates.

You will need to link this account to your everyday account. Why pay more than you have to for goods? If you use a credit card to buy and don't pay it off promptly, you are paying really high interest on the debt. Do your darnedest to pay it all off, then keep it in a plastic container of water in the freezer.

Having to wait until it defrosts before you can use it will give you a cooling off period to ask yourself it you really need that item. Then you can use the automatic deposit function to make monthly or fortnightly deposits into it from your everyday account. How easy is that? It doesn't matter if it is only $5.00 each time, it will mount up. And when you see that compound interest also mounting up, you will be motivated to save more.
