Streamline Your Finances For Next Year

by Alisdair Cosgrove

This year has been a difficult and turbulent one for most people in terms of finances, and in a year that has seen some unprecedented incidents take place in the financial world, many households have suffered as a result of the repercussions. With the year nearly over and 2009 almost upon us it is a good idea for households to make a start on reviewing their finances in order to get them streamlined and sorted out in time for the new year. Early action can take much of the stress out of sorting your finances, and by doing this you could look forward to a less financially strained year in 2009.

For those that want to enjoy a more financially positive year in 2009 there are a number of steps that you can take to try and ease your financial situation and get your accounts into order. By doing this you may be able to avoid the financial problems that you may have experience this year, when many were unprepared for the chaos that was going to grip the financial markets.

When looking at streamlining your finances you need to be very thorough, and this means going through each of your repayments to check whether there are any cutbacks you can make. Of course, you can't cut back on necessary payment such as your rent or mortgage and your bills, but you may find that you are making payments on unnecessary subscriptions and memberships, and by cutting these out you could save yourself a fair amount of cash each month.

You may also find that you spend quite a lot of money each month on things like clothes and entertainment. Whilst you may have become used to spending frivolously, times are changing and it has become increasingly important to be more careful with your money. Try cutting back on the amount of money that you spend on your outgoings by reducing the amount that you put aside for things like going out and buying non essentials. You could try spending more time at home enjoying home cooked meals and DVDs rather than spending a fortune on eating out and going to the cinema.

As we all know, January is a time for sales, and you can pick up some real bargains during this period. You could save a fortune by thinking of all the present that you will need to buy over the course of next year, such as birthday presents, and then buying them in advance in the sales, where items are available for a fraction of the normal price. This will also mean that you are fully prepared and don't have to rush out to buy gifts at the last minute.

Another way in which you can reduce your outgoings and improve your finances is by reviewing your debts and working out whether you can cut back on the amount that you pay on them each month. For example, if you have a lot of high interest smaller debts you could save yourself money and hassle by consolidating them and paying just one larger, lower interest loan.
