There are five major types of rug making techniques. These are braided, hooked, rag, prodded, and woven. Braided rugs are just like the name suggests. These rugs are often made in an oval or circular pattern.
Traditional rug hooking is an old technique that produces rugs by pulling loops of yarn or fabric through a stiff woven base. This base is made from either burlap, linen, rug warp, or monks cloth. The loops are pulled through the back of the material by the aid of a latch hook tool and helps to achieve this goal by getting leverage on the fabric. A latch hook tool is often made from wood.

There are many other types of rugs that are available on the market, but the rest are machine manufactured. And while these rugs may hold up for awhile, handmade rugs are often better for those who want to keep their rugs around for many years.
