Erawan Shrine – Bangkok’s Revered Four Faced Statue God

by eMarketingEye

Situated on the corner of Ploenchit Road and Ratchadamri, the Erawan Shrine is considered to be a holy place of worship for many locals, which houses a Hindu god. The main attraction of the shrine is the statue of Phra Phrom which is a replica of the Hindu god known as Brahma. Crowds of tourists and worshippers alike frequent the place for both sightseeing and to pay respect.

Uniquely 4 faced, this statue is believed to be a source of good luck for those who worship at the shrine. Built in the year 1956, the Erawan Shrine has an interesting history to accompany its mystical aura. A construction project was underway at this particular corner in 1956 but was considered to be an unlucky site as several serious mishaps and injuries to workers occurred along with budgetary constraints. The shrine was then built as a force to combat the so called bad karma and evil spirits at work in the construction project. It is said that after the shrine was erected, all the calamities that were taking place were stilled.

Several people stream in day and night to pay homage to this Hindu god and also come to have their wishes granted. It is common to see items such as flowers, garlands and incense sticks offered up in worship to the statue. The smell of incense heavily wafts through the place and many Thai people even as they pass by in taxis, cars or skytrain bow their heads as a sign of respect towards this god. If you are lucky upon your visit, you will be able to see Thai dance troops, hired by a worshipper, perform as a thanksgiving offering at this shrine.

Visitors looking for a Bangkok apartment from which to explore this colourful and cultural city can stay at the Bangkok President Park. The complex is ideal for those interested in a Bangkok service apartment as a modern and comfortable base for relaxation.
